After 5 years of species monitoring and community conversations, we’re honoured to release the first Community Stakeholders’ Report from the Obudu Dragonfly Conservation Project.
What we found is urgent.
Our surveys across the Obudu montane region in Obanliku LGA, Cross River State, confirm 6 threatened odonate species — dragonflies and damselflies — living in the Ranch.
Two of these species are Critically Endangered and found nowhere else in the world except Obudu Ranch.
Why are they threatened?
Through town hall meetings, leaders’ forums, and interviews in 8 communities, we learned that the answer isn’t simple. Dry-season fires and deforestation are the leading threats. But behind them is a utilize-protect dilemma:
Communities need fresh grass for cattle, larger farmland for food security, and sustainable livelihoods.
Right now, current practices are putting both people and biodiversity at risk.
This report is about generating solutions
Inside, you’ll find the voices of community members, evidence-based recommendations, and a roadmap to balance human needs with habitat protection.
We wrote this report for everyone: conservationists, policymakers, researchers, media, and most importantly, the people of Obudu Cattle Ranch.
